Even the best lawns wear down and develop patchy spots from time to time. Grass thinning can occur due to disease, insect infestation, severe weather conditions, and frequent foot traffic. If you notice your lawn lacks the fullness it once had, then that means it stands to benefit from overseeding. Overseeding involves spreading grass seeds in your yard to promote new growth, eliminate bare spots, and improve overall density.

At Sharp Lawn Care, we provide professional overseeding services to residents in Sioux Falls, SD, Sioux City, IA, and surrounding cities in southern South Dakota. Our team performs overseeding in the late summer as an add-on to our Sharp Aeration Package by using our preferred blend of turf type tall fescue seeds. We are so confident in the quality and effectiveness of our overseeding service that we back it with our 100% loophole-free satisfaction guarantee. If you want a thicker, fuller lawn, call us today at (605) 251-6880 to schedule our overseeding services in Sioux Falls, SD!

When do we perform our overseeding services?

We offer our overseeding services in the late summer, between August 20 and September 20, as an add-on to our Sharp Aeration Package. Our team will overseed your lawn after performing core aeration to ensure optimal results. An aerated lawn features freshly churned soil and countless soil plug holes that create an ideal environment for grass seeds to establish roots and grow.

Although our aeration package includes core aeration treatments in both the early spring and late summer, we only overseed after the latter treatment since it positions your grass seeds for peak success. That's because the cooler fall weather provides more favorable growing conditions than when temperatures rise in the late spring and summer. The only time we would overseed in the spring is if your lawn is completely bare.

What do we use to overseed your lawn?

Cool-season grass is prevalent in the Sioux Falls, SD and Sioux City, IA areas due to our colder climate. This type of grass flourishes in the spring and fall when cooler temperatures prevail and stay below 75 degrees. Turf type tall fescue, ryegrass, and Kentucky bluegrass are all commonly found in our region. To get the best result for our clients, we use a turf type tall fescue seed blend to overseed your lawn. These seeds develop into dense, lush, verdant pieces of grass as they mature and will beautify your lawn's appearance. Turf type tall fescue is also very tolerant to shade, drought, and wear due to its extensive root system. Once fully developed, this type of grass features roots that are 2 to 3 feet deep, increasing your lawn's resiliency.

We spread 5 pounds of grass seed for every 1,000 square feet of your property that requires seeding.

Road Map to a Sharp Lawn

Lawn Road Map: Step One

Aeration is the First Step

Aeration removes soil cores that can prevent sunlight, water, and nutrients from penetrating the root structure. It promotes lush, healthy grass that’s a great defense against weeds and insect pests. This should be repeated every spring and fall. Learn more about aeration.

Lawn Road Map: Step Two

Fertilization & Weed Control Strengthen Your Lawn

Throughout the season, fertilization and weed control strengthens your grass and kills weeds, which opens the area for more grass to grow once planted in the fall. This should be repeated every season—more on fertilization and weed control.

Lawn Road Map: Step Three

Overseeding Promotes New Growth

In fall, the weeds are under control, the pests are mostly gone, and there are still several weeks of temperatures and conditions ideal for growth. That makes it the only perfect time for overseeding so that you get great new growth ahead of winter and are ready to go the next spring. One other thing to mention is the type of grass seed, which is the most important thing to consider. Choosing the correct seed will give your lawn a better growth habit and improve wear, heat, and drought tolerance. This should be done every fall until thick and then every 3-5 years, or as needed. Get the full story on fall seeding.

Lawn Road Map: Step Four

Keep Your Grass at the Proper Height

Keeping your grass at the proper height for the season has two benefits: it provides shade for the roots during the hotter months and reduces other stresses that can cause damage. During spring and fall, keep it at 3 ½ to 4 inches; go up to 4 ½ inches during the summer. Regardless of length, never cut more than 40% off at once. How to do mowing right.

Lawn Road Map: Step Five

The Right Amount of Water

Adequately water, but don’t overwater. Water 2 or 3 days each week, with an inch per week being the average in spring and fall and up to 2 inches when it gets hotter in the summer. Save water and money by watering early in the morning before evaporation kicks in—more watering tips here.

Lawn Road Map: Step Six

Enjoy Your Sharp Lawn!

This road map to a Sharp Lawn is really a formula we’ve developed and honed for nearly 2 decades now. Working together with you, we’ll follow this plan, and you’ll see a Sharp lawn in just 1-2 seasons. Better yet, we’ll keep it that way!
